Grenades flashed over the walls and gates of the Arab village, splitting them into rubble and jagged iron daggers. The men stormed in, hurdled the still smoking metal and broke through into the narrow streets. They were walking, sprinting, throwing grenades, firing their Uzi submachine guns, and they were crying.

The captain, Isaac Ben-Ami, yelled, “Acharay!—After me!”—but the men were already abreast or ahead of him. Legionnaires vanished through the dust toward the center of the village. At the intersection of the main paved street the paratroopers halted. The Uzis and automatic rifles hammered in off-key chorus, raking storefronts and open windows, searching for anything that threatened or even moved. Off to the right the other company reached a parallel intersection. An Israeli lieutenant darted into the main street spraying its length with a burst from his Uzi. He was level with an abandoned cafe and an empty Jordanian jeep when a carbine cracked thinly from somewhere above. The lieutenant staggered against the jeep’s fender. From the same intersection a second soldier came running, firing from the hip at the second-story window. By the jeep’s fender he fell, too, shot. Two more men started to run after him. An officer finally shouted, “For God’s sake, stop!”
